The Year of the Tight End

The NFL tight end position continues to evolve as many tight ends play a prominent role in the passing game of offenses around the NFL.

Last season, NFL tight ends totaled their most receptions (2,249) and receiving yards (24,659) ever in a single season.

Through Week 10, tight ends have totaled 1,307 receptions and 14,798 receiving yards and are on pace to surpass last season's record.

"The guys are more athletic, now from when I first came into the league," says CBS analyst and former NFL tight end SHANNON SHARPE, who currently ranks second all-time at the position in receptions (815) and receiving yards (10,060). "They can run and they can make the catch. You are not surprised when a tight end makes a great catch because it's almost commonplace now for guys like VERNON DAVIS, ANTONIO GATES, TONY GONZALEZ, TODD HEAP and JASON WITTEN to name a few. There are so many guys that are athletic."

Gates has created mismatches throughout his career with his size when facing safeties and his speed versus linebackers. As Chargers quarterback PHILIP RIVERS' No. 1 receiving option, Gates is tied for an NFL-best with nine touchdown receptions and leads all tight ends in receiving yards (663).

The All-Star tight end is five touchdown receptions shy of surpassing his own record for the most ever by a tight end in a single season (13 in 2004), which he currently shares with Vernon Davis (13 in 2009).

"When you look around the league, every team has a guy at that position that can make a play," says Gates. "Just to see how far the position has evolved since tight ends were predominantly there to block is incredible. It's becoming more of the role of a receiver. There are a handful of tight ends that lead their team in receptions."

4th Quarter Comebacks

Through the first 10 weeks of the season, nearly 70% percent of NFL games ) have been within one score (eight points or fewer) at some point during the fourth quarter. Additionally, almost 22 percent of games (31 of 144, 21.5 percent) this year have featured a lead change in the fourth quarter.

"This is what the league is all about," says Atlanta Falcons head coach MIKE SMITH, whose team ties the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the most fourth-quarter comeback wins with four. "About 60 percent of games are decided by eight points or fewer and about 30 percent by three points of fewer. That's just the way it is. There are going to be ebbs and flows in games. Sometimes we start fast and jump out to a lead and there are other times where we haven't started fast and had to come back. But one thing I know about this group of guys is that they do not give up. They are resilient."

With games being so close, you need to have a leader at the quarterback position to bring your team back in the fourth quarter.

"You're looking for a quarterback who has poise and awareness," says NFL Network analyst STEVE MARIUCCI. "You want to have a guy who's sharp and intelligent."

In Week 10, quarterback MATT RYAN guided the Falcons to a 26-21 comeback victory over the Baltimore Ravens by leading a seven-play, 80-yard drive in 45 seconds. He capped the drive with a 33-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver RODDY WHITE with 20 seconds remaining in the game.

"With 65 seconds to go, we got the ball back," says Ryan. "We've been in those situations before so we were confident. We just told one another to do our jobs. Guys just went out there and executed. We stayed patient and poised. And we went out there and made plays. We've done it before and we were able to do it again. We never give up. And when you do that, you always have a chance."

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback JOSH FREEMAN has six fourth-quarter comeback wins in just 18 career starts. His play is a big reason the Buccaneers are 6-3 and in the thick of the NFC playoff race.

"He's resilient and wise beyond his years," says Tampa Bay head coach RAHEEM MORRIS about his young QB. "He comes to the sidelines and knows exactly what he wants to do. I can't say enough about him and how he leads those guys. It's awesome. There's no quarterback other than Josh Freeman who I want when we're coming from behind. He has so much confidence in himself."

"It really stems from a fundamental level, and just wanting to win, and understanding what it's going to take to win. Early on in my career, back in college, I was trying to force things, trying to get all the plays done and get the big play with a shot early on, and it was resulting in turnovers. Now I understand the situation â€“ how many timeouts, what point in the game we're at and how many points we need to win. You need to take what the defense gives you. As an offense, I think we have the mentality that we're going to go get it. We love the feeling of winning."

The confidence a fourth-quarterback comeback gives a team

"Everybody feels that we have a chance in every game. Obviously you want to go out in the first three-and-a-half quarters and find a way to take a commanding lead, but at the same time, it's the NFL and not a lot of games end up in blowouts. So we know that the way our team is built, it's going to come down to the wire almost every week. Just having the confidence that we've done it before, and knowing we can do it again, helps us a lot as a young team."

The most important trait he attributes to a fourth-quarter comeback

"My head. I keep a cool head, and know what we're trying to do offensively. I know what kind of defense we're going to be playing against and what coverages we're going to see. It all starts with preparation. The more you're prepared, the better you feel going into that situation, the more likely you are to play calm, cool, collected and find a way to get it done."

NFL Draft Rounds 2 and 3

With Jimmy Clausen and Colt McCoy still on the board at the beginning of the second round, many expected both to be selected in the first few picks. Minnesota, Cleveland, Buffalo and even Kansas City passed up on the QB prospects. Minnesota would have been a good learning process for JC assuming that Favre would be his mentor for a year or two. Buffalo and Cleveland have question marks at the QB position and don't have that franchise type player. Kansas City was more of a long shot with Matt Cassel. They did have a $7 million option for him next year so if they did bring Clausen in he could learn for a year and be reunited with college coach, Charlie Weis.

Finally, Clausen was drafted by Carolina at the 48th overall slot. During a post draft interview he said he couldn't be happier to be in Carolina. With Matt Moore trying to fill the shoes of Jake Delhomme, the drafting of Clausen should cause a competition for the starting roll. McCoy waited till pick 85 to be selected by the Cleveland Browns. Perhaps his lack of arm strength was the reason the Browns didn't want to take a chance at him earlier on in the draft. However, when a quarterback like this slips to you in the late 3rd round, you cannot pass of him...especially if your the Browns. It's players like McCoy who keep the Browns fans and organization going. With an earlier disappointment of not drafting players such as Earl Thomas and Taylor Mays, the acquisition of McCoy is just what Cleveland needed. The Browns may not be contenders this year, but give them 2 or 3 years and they could make a deep run in the playoffs.

The Ravens had a great second round today picking up Mt. Cody and Sergio Kindle. Both players bring an intensity that the Ravens are accustomed to. Kindle may have slipped this far due to injury concerns. Kindle was at one point projected an early first round pick. Terrance Cody has the skills to be an elite nose tackle. He too was a steal here.

The 2010 Draft has done nothing short of entertaining us. Mock Draft's were shattered by players being drafted early and later than projected such as Tebow, Clausen, McCoy and Kindle. Tomorrow concludes the Draft. Although your team might not have many picks left, you should still watch the Draft to see who your division foes take in order to know what to look for this year.

2010 looks to be a promising season for some and a tough road for others. Nonetheless, NFL Tickets will be hard to come by for games such as Jets vs. Pats and Cowboys vs. Giants, which are both Monday Night Football games. Some of the things to look at when looking at this list of strength of schedules: strong teams such as the Cardinals and Charges have two of the weakest schedules in the league and young teams such as the Titans and Texans have the strongest. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out. It is also noted that each regular season game is capped with a division match up which should make for an exciting end of the season. Unlike the NBA Playoffs, which may be grueling sometimes, the NFL Playoffs are something to look forward to seeing how its win game 1 or go home. Whether you look to bet on sports or just like football in general, this season should be exciting.

LeBron Needs Help

Let's face it, LeBron needs help in game 3. The Cavaliers cannot win a championship with one star player. In game 2, the king scored 15 of his 40 points in the final 12 minutes of the game. Many of the analysts looked at this as LeBron saying screw this, "I'm taking over." This may have worked this time, but will it work whenever the Cavs need him to carry them to victory?

Key acquisitions in Jamison, Shaq, Moon and Parker have given the Cavs the tools and bodies fit perfectly for a Championship run. However, LeBron still seems to get stuck with a bulk of the work. Tomorrow Cleveland goes into a hostile environment where US Airlines Arena will be rocking and looking to support the Bulls in hopes of their first win of the series. If the Bulls lose this game you can pretty much count them out of the series. On the other side the Cavaliers are looking to shutout the Bulls and win four games as fast as they can in hopes of getting some rest before the conference semi finals.

Joakim Noah and Kevin Garnett have caused some early controversy in the 2010 playoffs thus far. The question here is, who can back it up? Joey Noah or KG?The Bulls are down 2-0 to the Cavaliers. Joakim Noah came off his best playoff performance in his young career, but still did nothing to back up the comments he made about the beautiful city of Cleveland. Chants of "Noah sucks" echoed in Quicken Loans Arena throughout the game and will most likely continue throughout his career coming to Cleveland.

Kevin Garnett and "Doc Q" got into a little scuffle when The Big Ticket threw a bow that connected to Richardson's face. Garnett got suspended one game as a result. Richardson claimed he was going over to ask if Pierce was faking his injury again. Pierce has been known to over exaggerate on most of his "injuries." In his post game interview Garnett claimed the elbow was not intentional. This coming from the guy who made Glen Davis cry during the game last year.

Tiger Feeling The Heat

Curious as to what Tiger Woods was doing these days, I came across a 2007 PGA Championship article which included the picture featured above. As we all know, Woods went on to win the PGA Championship that year, but few know of the battle he fought; "Swamp Ass." I don't know if it was the texture of the pants, but man did he look worse than John Daly. Sure Daly keeps his cool by packing "heat" andslammin' diet cokes during his rounds, but damn Tiger you must be doing something wrong. Looking closely at the picture, Tiger is showing nothing but a big smile. Well Tiger, that smile isn't gonna hide the embarrassment that is "Swamp Ass."

As the day brightened and the humidity increased, "Swamp Ass" crept around and on to the front of Tiger's pants. It's safe to say that this wasn't really "Swamp Ass," but was instead his evil cousin "Swamp Cock" who was playing for keeps. This picture clearly demonstrates that "Swamp Cock" obviously got more media attention.

Here's a tip for you Tiger, we know that you change gloves every few holes, but please bring a few extra pairs of pants next time to save the embarrassment. Your a great golfer and have won many tournaments and events, but going 0-1 against the "Swamp Family" is something you don't want to do. My apologies to those who saw this live in HD.

Vick on a Short Leash

Michael Vick is a name in the past to most. However, the former NFL star is scheduled for release today. Many would consider what Vick had in the NFL to be a blessing. Michael Vick took it for granted and now he suffers major losses in assets, endorsements and more importantly his NFL career.

The toughest thing the former Falcons quarterback will face is regaining his once role model like image to others. Vick's security guards stated that he has watched reruns of films such a Homeward Bound, Air Bud, Beethoven's 2nd, All Dogs Go to Heaven and Beverly Hills Chihuahua to mentally prepare for his release. Vick believes by watching these films, he will gain a full understanding of a day in the life of a dog.

The jail that Vick is being held at reports that he is ready for release. However, not everyone will be cheering when #7 gets out. Local news stations in Atlanta have shown footage of packs of dogs boarding trains and buses to prepare for his release date. Other dogs who were found in Vick's house have already fled the country. Due to the economy today, some dogs aren't so lucky. The unemployed will have to resort to boarding up their once safe dog houses. McGruff the "Crime Dog" stated to the press; "I'm going to go Rodney King all over his ass the minute he walks out."

The day Michael Vick gets out will be a sad day for all. PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) may be the only hope for local canines. Good luck my furry little four legged friends.

DETROIT, MI - NBA announcer and ultimate hairdo visionary Hubie Brown delved into excruciating detail Sunday during a reply in the second quarter of ABC’s broadcast of the Chicago-Detroit game.

It was a familiar scenario for many NBA viewers: In discussing a play that viewers had just seen mere seconds ago, Brown discussed every detail of that same play, as if he were describing the scene to a bunch of blind, retarded head trauma victims in a loony bin.

The play in question involved a pretty routine drive to the lane by Pistons guard Chauncey Billups, who then passed it to Tayshaun Prince for a three pointer.

“You see what he does right here, is he goes by his guy and drives to the paint, which he can do. He’s very underrated as a player,” Brown said of Billups, a former NBA Finals MVP. “And then what he does, just watch right here, he passes the basketball out to his teammate, Tayshaun Prince, who you know can hit that three point shot.”

Brown could have easily cut his losses there and stopped talking, but something underneath his albino rat’s nest hair made him believe that he had to “educate” the dumb viewer on other matters. (truncated version)

“Now what’s going to happen that the camera doesn’t show is that Prince hits the three. But if you watch Billups here, he is able to tell that Prince is his teammate because Prince is wearing the same color jersey as him. The rods and cones in Chauncey’s eyeballs are working properly, enabling him to distinguish between different colors. Of course, it also doesn’t hurt that the two have been teammates for many years and Billups’ brain is able to retain the image of Prince, recognizing him as someone he knows and trusts. You can’t leave Prince alone. He is one of the premier three point shooters and lizards in the league. Now what Billups does after the pass is nice. He continues to breathe, he inhales air, most of which is composed of nitrogen but what his lungs do is take in the oxygen part. The oxygen is what they want. He exhales what his body doesn’t need – the nitrogen and the carbon dioxide. There is oxygen released as well -- many people don’t know this but the NBA player can only take in so much oxygen. But the stuff he does take in then goes into his bloodstream and the blood takes it to Billups cells, Chauncey has very tough, underrated cells. These cells receive the oxygen and the mitochondria within the cells – the true workhorses of the league – just go to work, enabling Billups to get back on defense and cover Duhon. Now the thing about Chris Duhon..."

Anyone who surfs the ESPN conversations frequently has by now heard of this guy "Austin" who claims to know his stuff and is a so-called 1st half line guru. He loves to ramble about his picks and how much he knows, until the the buzzer sounds and his parlay is shot down. I don't mind people using these conversations for advice and stating their occasional plays, but this guy "Austin" is by the far the worst. I hate Notre Dame fans with a passion, but this guy makes me hate them even more.

Alex Boone, a native of Lakewood, Ohio was arrested once again Sunday due to a drunken rampage outside his apartment where he was staying while training for the NFL Draft. Boone has been known as a drunk on the OSU campus ever since his 2006 face-to-face encounter with a car. He then blew a 0.159 and was only charged with a $300 fine and a 10-day suspension.

Boone who is 6'8 and 312 pounds was seen jumping on cars, threatening officers, banging on garage doors looking for more booze and resisting arrest. According to the buckeye extra police tasered the big fella three times in order to restrain him and prevent any other trucks from being tackled.

"It's been quiet, not too many issues and problems with it," she said. "I just think he's been under a tremendous amount of pressure lately, and this is the first time he's been out (in California). Apparently, he got a little carried away." - Alex Boone's Mother

Yeah....I guess you could say he got a little carried away. It's perfectly normal for a 21 year old to tackle cars on a Sunday evening. Boone was taken to jail but remained so uncooperative that the booking process could not be completed. He remains at large and is still under the influence.

Larry Fitzgerald's fourth quarter touchdown looked like it was going to be the game winner. To celebrate this, some Tuscan Comcast viewers got a frontal view of a man's ding dong from a local adult station, Club Jenna.

Viewers got anywhere from 10 to 30 seconds of this woman preparing to chow down on her wiener infested Superbowl. After suffering a 100-0 defeat against Covenant School, a private Christian School in Dallas, the girls of Dallas Academy are all smiles today. Covenant School has apologized to the team of 8 girls and the school as whole for their lack of respect. Covenant continued to run up the score and completely embarrass these poor players throughout the game. Sources say that coaches and Covenant fans cheered while jumping up and down as they neared 100 points.

"Covenant school officials have met with and personally apologized to Dallas Academy Headmaster Jim Richardson and Athletic Director Jeremy Civello and wish to extend their highest praise to each member of the Dallas Academy Varsity Girls Basketball team for their strength, composure and fortitude in a game in which they clearly emerged the winner. Crime Rate Plummets (temporarily)

The inauguration of 44th President, Barack Obama, has already brought change to America. On Tuesday, between the hours of 10:30am and 4:00pm, the crime rate suddenly plummeted across the United States. Statisticians were at first puzzled as to how the crime rate could drop down so far and so quickly. One person then figured out why no crimes were happening anywhere.
